X.L.F.
Beijing

No stranger to the art of audio production, Xiao Linfeng, better known throughout the China’s party circuit as X.L.F., marks a new high point along his creative path with the upcoming double EP, “Cut Off”. “Cut Off”, out March 2010, is his debut release on the label Acupuncture and features the title track plus the retro-futuristic soundscape, “Jazz Bzzz”. The inspiration for “Jazz Bzzz” came from watching an underground jazz band performance, filmed at Woodstock in 1969. This song features “melodies I wrote and then cut into little pieces,” X.L.F. says for the truly dance-worthy track, “I used a Korg MS20 to add some special nuances and make it more rhythmic.”

“The unknown jazz band was playing on a small stage,” X.L.F. recalls, “I loved the cello and thought it would be nice to write 4 bars with a sound like that, so I did.” A touch of avant-garde meets classicalism, this is no ordinary dance track. Comprised like an overture of an opera, it’s an unexpected synthesis of computerized jazz sparked with points of ignition. A symphonic interlude comes in the last 2 minutes, bringing the track to its peak. “I put a 1000Htz little piece of sound underneath the Jazz loop from the very beginning of the track, and tuned it up around the end,” X.L.F. explains. Like a beacon of new sound, it plays through like a brilliant horizon. It’s as if “Jazz Bzzz” were created for a large starlit amphitheater, with chorus line dancers in costume and an elaborate production set.

Be sure not to miss this unique producer as he ties in music from all genres into his dance worthy beats at this year’s JUE Festival
